Song Title
01. Ballad of Carol Lynn Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "It was written 30 minutes before recording it while the rest of the band was having supper. It's a first take - all live except for the Civil War-sounding horns. It's very spooky. That's the sound of the church, man. That's the church talking to us. I never was quite sure what the song was about 'cause I recorded it right after writing it, but now I think it might have been a self-criticism whereby I just turned myself into a character and analyzed myself that way. But I don't know for sure. Which is even cooler. Not to know who Carol Lynn is, but still having her speak through you."

02. Don't Wanna Know Why Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "That's actually the answer to a song that was written about me called 'You Never Say Goodbye' by an artist who will remain unnamed."

03. Jacksonville Skyline Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "Damn! I told them just to call it 'Jacksonville.' Those bastards!" He laughs. "I guess if I was ever going to write my own sort of 'Coal Miner's Daughter,' this would be it. It's really just absolutely about where I'm from and the things I saw growing up. It's autobiographical for the most part."

04. Reason To Lie Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "I can't listen to it anymore because it gives me creepy chills. It's a very close to me kind of song."

05. Don't Be Sad Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "I think there's a duality in that song. I think on one hand, it's saying, 'Hang on, we'll get through this,' but deep down, we know we're not going to get through it at all. I don't know. Damn, that song just kinda says it all, doesn't it?"

06. Sit & Listen To The Rain Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "It's another song where I'm going back to my life in North Carolina. It's about what it was like to feel so sort of abandoned and so lonely in a place that was so still. Literally, stuff that you'd do on a Tuesday afternoon or a Tuesday evening is you'd sit on the porch and smoke cigarettes and that was about it. I love where I'm from and I'm very proud of being from there - but I'm so proud of it that I also want to examine all the different possibilities of how heavy and how real - in an unreal sort of way - Jacksonville is. And that's another song where I get to think about that."

07. Under Your Breath Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "Most of that was written by Mike Daley. I went in and changed a couple of verses and the bridge. But I don't know. I mean, damn. 'Sometimes I wish I were deaf and I wouldn't hear the words you say under your breath.' I mean, what more do you need to say?"

08. Mirror, Mirror Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "Hmmm. Am I laughing at death? Or just scared to hell of it?"

09. Paper Moon Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "That's another one of my eternal love songs to someone. It's absolutely, completely true. I'm not being facetious. I'm not being ironic. I'm not being coy. I listen to that song now, and that's absolutely where I was at the time. I was cosmically in love. And this one to me is the Star Wars of all my love songs. The light saber of all my love songs."

10. What The Devil Wanted Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: That's based on a recurring dream I had as a kid that has sort of continued a little bit into my adult life about the devil and about this weird trip I take where I go on this plane and I fly to a city which turns out to be Hell. I'm supposed to have this appointment but I never quite find out what's going on. It might also be about love. If you listen to the song, the character in it is selling his soul for love. But once that's done - the line is "All my time is wasteful now" - you might have love but no way to experience it. It's kinda like what people will do for love. They'll sell their soul for it - even if they can't experience or communicate it - just to know that they did have it."

11. Crazy About You Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "I was pretty in love when I wrote that one. That's about it."

12. My Hometown Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "Another one about Jacksonville - although this one is actually about my ma and my pa and the neighborhood where I grew up."

13. Easy Hearts Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "'Easy Hearts.' Ooooooo. Man. I'm just going to kinda leave that one open to interpretations. But, you know, what do you do when you're at the end of your rope. Is there a somebody there for you? It's an important question."

14. Bar Lights Play Real Audio Play Windows Media
Ryan Adams: "Bottoms up! Ching, ching. Have a damn good time out there!"
